Cricket
The Cricket Club, Vis, named after Sir William Hoste, is one of only three cricket clubs in Croatia. Founded in 1809
Cricket was brought to the island of Vis by captain Sir William Hoste. At that time, island was the stronghold of the Knight Commander, from there he ravaged French fleet on the Adriatic. To kill the boredom of his soldiers, he founded the cricket club in 1809. (which nowadays brings the title of the oldest cricket club in Europe – outside the UK). Vis was flourishing then, in just a few years it grew to tens of thousands of inhabitants, but with the departure of the English, cricket fell into oblivion.
A returnee from Australia, and a cricket enthusiast, a winemaker Niko Roki, when heard about this anecdote, decided with his son Oliver, to restore the forgotten sport of cricket on Vis. Soon, the team gathered, started working with the young people, improvised the field. Friends from abroad donated equipment. The news has spread around the world, and thus, nowadays, Vis has a whole new attraction on offer which developed into a cricket tourism, most often out of the main season, when each Kuna is several times more valuable.
Clubs from all over the Europe, as well as from all over the world, are coming to Vis
to play cricket 😊.
