Although Vis is a relatively small island – Vis is an island of wine, and as such, since ancient times, its wine has been known for its quality
During the Greek colonization, wine making and wine trade were the main economic activities on the island. While in Komiža, fishing has always been dominant, viticulture was the basis of the economy of the town of Vis, until the Second World War. The “golden age” of viticulture in Vis was the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The wine from Vis was known and exported all over the Austro – Hungarian Empire. In 1890 alone, 100,000 hectoliters of wine were produced in Vis, which was mostly exported. During this period of prosperity, in the town of Vis most public buildings and private houses were built. Even today, for many inhabitants of Vis, and for all those who feel that way, wine is the meaning of life.
Vugava is the most famous wine from the island, named after a white grape variety, known for its rich fullness and honey taste. The grape sort Plavac mali is widely known for its sweetens, but it happens that Vugava even surpasses it. Vugava is harvested first, in September, and for Plavac, sometimes is waited until the end of October.
If you are a wine fan and you like to savour the best wines, combined with your stay in nature and sightseeing the beautiful views of the island of Vis, be sure to book your place on one of the Wine Tours, when you come to the island.
Wine tour of the island includes exploration of Vis. On the Wine roads you can experience the most original wine locations, get to know winemakers and their products. Meet the islanders and taste their products.
The most famous wines on the island are the wines from the “Lipanović” winery, which combines extraordinary freshness with the refinement of Plavac mali that grows on the sandy soil of the island. We recommend that you try their Vugava as well. The ”Lipanović” winery is housed in an extremely interesting wine cellar in a military tunnel of the former Yugoslavian Army, which today treasures its exquisitely recognizable Plavac and Vugava.
Another recommendation for a good wine is the ”Roki’s” winery, small organic producers with their delicious Plavac mali, “the best to be enjoyed in their exceptional rustic tavern of the same name – ‘Roki’s.”
