Excursion – Blue Cave, Biševo Island
If you are coming to the island of Vis, you should definitely visit the Blue Cave, which is a must-see attraction
Why is this cave so fascinating and different from similar blue caves? According to many globetrotters and distinguished travellers, the Blue Cave of Biševo by its beauty, surpasses the world-famous Grotta Azzurra on Capri Island, near Naples. It was proclaimed a protected geomorphological monument of nature in 1951.
The specific phenomenon of blue and silver shades of the sea, creates the distinctiveness and splendor of the Biševo Blue Cave. Sunlight penetrates the underwater opening where it breaks, creatting the blue hues. Depending on the time of the day, and the angle of light refraction inside the cave, the colors blend into each other, so the sea in the cave sometimes has the color of liquid silver.
The cave has two openings, one smaller, artificially formed so that a rowboat can pass through – that opening has no effect on the lighting in the cave. The opening has been expanded in 1884, by the idea of Baron Eugene von Ransonet, the first who described and painted the exceptional beauty of the cave. The second opening is much wider, it is on the south side of the cave, below the sea level through which penetrates the sunlight. Between 11am and 1pm, during the sunny calm day, sun rays pass through the underwater opening into the Blue Cave, reflect from the white bottom and illuminate the cave in blue, while the objects in water glimmer in silver.
How long does the trip take and where to book the place?
