If you are exploring or sailing in Dalmatia and have not visited Vis island and its restaurants, you are definitely deprived of an experience to taste the culinary highlights this area has to offer
Vis is specific in many ways, and so is its gastronomic offer. Unique microclimate, rich and fertile plateau in the central part of the island, numerous fields, and the best fishing zone in the middle Adriatic, guarantee the quality and diversity of island products.
The town of Komiža is considered to be the cradle of fishing, not only in the Adriatic, but beyond. Fishermen from Komiža were known throughout the Mediterranean and America as experts in their craft, having changed the world of fishing with innovations and numerous inventions.
The island of Vis, being distanced from most of developed tourist destinations, has managed to preserve its authenticity even in the gastronomic sense.
This island likes to boast that it is different from all other localities inthe Adriatic,in culinary but also in every other sense, and this is for the most part true. On Vis, indeed, you may savour delicious dishes you won’t find anywhere else.
The gastronomic renaissance that is just happening on Vis, reveals the rich diversity of unique and authentic offer in its restaurants, where the atmosphere is very simple, cosy, domestic. An easy way to prepare fresh seasonal food has characterized the entire Dalmatian cuisine, but on the island of Vis, it has grown into an artistic act: grilled sardines, grilled squid freshly caught, roasted tomatoes, aubergines and zucchini, are part of the centuries-old fishermen- and peasant-style menu.
Flavours of tradition: dried, salted and smoked fish, pasta with fish stew/manistra na brujet, marinated grilled fish or octopus burgers/polpete od hobotnice, are a constant inspiration to the imaginative chefs of Vis and Komiža.
When you come to Vis be sure to try the octopus or lamb under the bell (the famous peka), anchovy carpaccio, octopus salad, shrimp risotto, black risotto, brudet/brujet (local fish stew), and various legume-based dishes that are commonly prepared on the island.
In summer season, there are frequent crowds on the island, we recommend you to reserve in advance a place at local restaurants and taverns.
