Let all the senses enjoy unique gastronomic delights with the Queen of the Mediterranean – the fig
Since ancient times, dried figs have been used for the production of so-called smokvenjak or dried figs cake, and one such delicacy is still traditionally made today on the island of Vis, called Viški Hib. The name hib derives from the word ‘hlib’, which means a bread.
The main quality of hib is freshness, lightness, simplicity and use of healthy ingredients and spices brought to a perfect delicacy by the local people – a harmony of authenticity and natural flavours. The ingredients are eco-friendly, without any artificial additives. It is made of figs, fennel, almonds, orange peel and herbs. It is stored in dried laurel and rosemary leaves, which protect the hib from flies and other parasites, giving it also an additional aroma.
From ancient times, hib was made by wives of island peasants, who have been labouring in fields from dawn to dusk, and this energy bar was a good source for restoring the strength needed to work. On the one hand, it was a typical peasant food, and on the other, festive, because few pieces of hib were always kept for Christmas, when they were cut into thin slices as a treat, and served with a small glass of herb brandy or Prošek (a sweet dessert wine, traditionally from the southern Croatia).
How to obtain the best out of your own climate, which will be recognized and distinguished by people from other regions and localities? Hib is a perfect example of how tradition is preserved.
