Milna is a small village and cove located on the south side of the island of Vis, near the village Rukavac. The name Milna comes from the local word milo meaning shallow, which is why the cove is named after – there is a sandy and pebble beach with long shallows, which is perfect for families with young children. Except Vis, the homonymous settlements are also on the neighbouring islands of Hvar and Brac.
Milna Bay is an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet family holiday in a beautiful natural environment, that is why this settlement has become a famous summer resort on the island. There is a shop and a restaurant in the village, and there is also a possibility of renting a motorboat to visit the nearby bays and islets: Budihovac – which is famous for its two beautiful beaches, and Ravnik – known for its natural phenomenon – the Green Cave.
Green Cave – located about 500 m from the coast, and named after the magical greenish reflection of the sea. A powerful beam of sunlight comes through a small opening on the ceiling of the cave. In a dark cave, reflecting the light against the bottom of the rocks – covered by multitude of green algae, it creates a miraculous greenish reflex.
This pristine natural attraction has two large openings at the front, separated by a massive pillar of stone. The right entrance is twice as wide as the left one. The cave is spacious and can be easily accessed by boats.
In the past, during World War II, in the Green Cave hid the small warships. As a shelter the cave was also used by fishermen, keeping them safe during the bad weather, in the meanwhile they were cleaning nets, sorting fish, or just resting briefly before the next fishing.
Even today, happens that some boaters seek refuge in the Green Cave, so in recent times the control of the cave has been increased, since this area was declared a protected landscape of the Republic of Croatia, due to its geomorphological characteristics.
To the east of the settlement Milna, developed a weekend-resort Ženka. A few hundred meters away from Milna, about a 10-minute walk along the field path, you can reach the beautiful sandy beach – Zaglav. A long sandy beach that still manages to preserve its natural beauty from the eyes of multitudes of tourists. There are only two houses in the bay and a small bar, where you can refresh yourself. Zaglav beach, with the Srebrena bay, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Vis.
Location: Milna is 9 km away from Vis, and 20 km from Komiža. Milna can be reached by the road, via Podstražje, or by a recent/new road via Stončica.
