Guest reviews

The apartment was just as we expected. Very clean, recently refurbished, with all the amenities we needed. The shower had a lovely waterfall head. The four of us were able to stay comfortably in the apartment, with two sharing the bedroom and two on the sofa bed in the living room. We were met directly off the bus from Vis town.  It was the perfect place for us to stay during our trip to Komiza, thank you so much Neri!

Punctual meeting, warm welcome, help in every possible way from the best beaches to the most authentic restaurants. We have travelled a lot and met all kinds of hosts but the owner Tita are so friendly and helpful that every traveller would wish for. Komiza is one of the last authentic, real fishermen’s village in Croatia. The apartment is comfortable, the beds are great, you can spend a relaxing time there, equipped well, only a simple coffee maker is missing, but we brought one.

Location is perfect only a 30 second walk to the town centre, and 2 minutes (maximum) walk to the beach!! Loved our host and our stay.

Location

Komiza

A small town you pass quickly trough, but with every passage you find something new. A small town that radiates by its authenticity, fully built out of stone houses, with an additional touch of magic of its inhabitants. Komiža will remain in your memory as an old love you would gladly return to....
And you will!

On the sunny side of the island, sheltered from the cold north winds, deep in the largest bay of the island of Vis, with a close-set cluster of tall houses, and narrow streets, stands Komiža. Owes its name to a phrase Com Issa. Issa is the ancient Greek/Hellenistic name for the town of Vis, and the meaning of the phrase would be – a place near Issa/Vis.

Komiža will get under your skin because of its crystal clear water, unspoiled nature and scents. Wild lavender, myrtle and rosemary will follow you through the central part of the island, and all the way to the island shores. Streets of Komiža, by their layout, narrow passages, souvenir-shops and ateliers could be a real adventure for every visitor, each and every day to explore and discover something new.

There are numerous sights in Komiža: the fort of Komiža – Komuna, the Church of St Nicholas, better known as Muster, another church of unusual name – Our Lady of the Pirates – Gospa Gusarica.

Komuna has the long history, today it hosts the Fisherman's Museum. In the museum, there are various fisherman tools on display, a large collection of sailor knots, and a special type of a fishing boat, the famous gaeta falkuša, a traditional boat used by fishermen from Komiža, one of the 10 most beautiful boats in the world, proclaimed by UNESCO.

Falkusa

The seaside of Komiža bay abounds in numerous secluded coves and pebbly beaches with a crystal clear open sea: Gusarica, Kamenice, Velo Žalo – all known for fresh, potable spring water, follow Lučica, Jurkovica,....and of course, we highly recommend to visit the rest of beautiful sandy and pebbly beaches on the island: Milna, Zaglav, Stončica, Stiniva, Srebrena – which are a real treat!

There are also beaches that are relatively isolated and a bit difficult/harder to access, which makes them ideal for nudists, and all those in search for peace and tranquillity.

The pet owners will gladden the beach officially allowed for pets – the beach Vartalac, situated on the southern side of Komiža bay. Most of the beaches are surrounded by refreshing shade of trees.

Vis, the open sea island, is the area with the largest concentration of nature monuments in Croatia, resulting that in 2019. the UNESCO's World Network of Geoparks proclaims the Vis Archipelago -  a Geopark. The marked geo-hiking trails located in Komiža will reveal stories about rocks, drywall, tradition and the coexistence of man and nature.

The island of Vis boasts unique microclimate, rich and fertile plateau in the central part of the island, while Komiža belongs to the strongest fishing zone on the Adriatic; this is why this destination is recognized as a true paradise for gastronomads, but also for all those who love top quality dishes, made with healthy food, recently caught fish, and fresh seafood.

By buying and consuming homemade products, you help secure the
future of our small local producers on the Island of Vis

In Komiža, you can choose between restaurants in idyllic gardens, yards, port restaurants or to pay a visit to some of the picturesque rural households. On your menu, find at least one of the "palate spectacles" of Komiža's chefs de cuisine: marinated fish, octopus under the bake, grilled fish, fresh grilled squid, octopus burgers/polpete.

After delicious food, round the story with a quality wine. Taste 'The Wine Princess of Vis Vugava', affectionately called, because of its fineness, quality and gorgeous honey taste! During the summer heats, what can be more delightful than a refreshing glass of wine with the aroma of ripe fruit?

For all those guests who like to spend their holiday in a more active way, in Komiža you can play tennis, soccer, basketball, or hike on one of the many walking trails, dive with one of the diving centres, rent a bike or scooter. Komiža travel agencies organize interesting trips to the neighbouring islands: such as Sušac, Sv.Andrija/Svetac, Brusnik, Palagruža or Biševo, known for its magical Blue Cave where you will enjoy the unforgettable experience.

Green cave

Until 1992, Vis was, in its greater part, a military base of the former Yugoslavia, the reason why the island was closed to foreign visitors, which kept it preserved from the wave of mass tourism, and its industrialisation. Some claim, that time has stopped here - the island kept, and still keeps, intact its genuine uniqueness.

Guests fond of the Robinson tourism, and all those eager to escape from the noisy, hectic everyday life, recognize in this a great advantage! Mysterious and abandoned military facilities (Tito's Cave, former RAF airport, Cape Stupište with former cannon and missile base ...), incorporated into beautiful, untouched nature, will make you feel like being in some James Bond movie - you could visit those remains by joining one of the exciting military tours!

Unspoiled nature as a true treat for all those preferring the Robinson tourism, has not missed the Hollywood producers, who skilfully estimated that the island of Vis would perfectly play the role of the Greek island, on which the previous sequel to the global cinema hit, one of Hollywood's most popular works - the comedy "Mamma Mia! ", was shot. In Komiža, you can find organized excursions to visit the locations where this famous movie was filmed.

Tavern Jastozera

When in Komiža, get ready for a serious enjoyment, prepare your camera, capture the unforgettable moments of the Komiža oasis, as you will surely share them in the next Instagram post!

Closest beach

Lucica beach

In the centre of Komiža there are several beaches, and the Lucica beach is the one that should be emphasised. It is located by the road, just a hundred meters behind a large breakwater that protects the city harbour

The beach is pebbly, equipped with showers, changing rooms, and you can also rent a deck chair, or have a refreshing drink at a small local beach bar. If you are coming by your boat, you can moor at one of the buoys that have been placed here.

The island of Vis has its own fresh water, which springs in many places, including the sea in front of the beach Lucica. When swimming, if you feel the colder areas in the sea, it just means that you have encountered another spring of fresh water.

To the south-east of the beach, there is a small ridge that separates this beach from the neighbouring beach - Jurkovica.

Location: Lucica Beach is two minutes' walk from the port of Komiža.
Beach type: pebble, suitable for young children

  • Croatia

Hi, I am Neri-Antica, but everyone calls me Tita. My father, who was a sailor, one voyage took to the far Panama, where he got married and where I was born. I grew up in Komiža – the place I love the most because of my husband Berto who is one true 'Komižan' I am a cook in a local kindergarten. I must admit that it is much easier to cook for the children, than for my Berto, because he, being a professional fisherman, has a large experience not only in fishing but also in preparing a good meal - fish is often on our table, especially the grilled. In our (rare) spare time, during the summer evenings, Berto and I prefer to stroll along the 'Komiška riva' (the vivid harbour promenade), where the most of the local happenings happen. Here, you'll get informed who's got a baby, or a letter from America(s), how much fish have the local fishermen catch, or who is our new dentist. Dear guest and friends, become a part of our small town, and let's walk together along the 'riva'.We shall gladly direct you towards the best coffee and where the locals by the finest peaches, grapes...

How to arrive to the island of Vis?

Island of Vis, with the island of Lastovo, is the furthest inhabited island in Croatian Adriatic. To the mainland Vis is connected by regular car ferry and a fast ship line/catamaran.

The ferry ride from Split to Vis lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes.

The catamaran ride takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. Catamaran boards passengers only.

Car ferry and catamaran lines between Split and Vis (and vice versa), during the summer season, are rather frequent (3-4 times a day). The tickets could be bought in advance – online, or at the Jadrolinija Agency in Split and Vis, before the departure.

Sailing schedule, prices and other information are available on the Jadrolinija web-site: Jadrolinija

When departing by your car to Vis, it is important to know that, when at the port in Split, you have to park your car in the queue for the ferry minimum one hour in advance. During the high season, it is rather crowded at the port, and if you have bought a reservation – a ticket, it is recommended that you park your car earlier (go get coffee/lunch in the meanwhile…) and return to the car 30 min before the ferry is due to go.

Note: catamaran from Split to Vis and from Vis to Split:

  • Tuesdays sails via town of Hvar – on the island of Hvar
  •  Wednesdays sails via Milna – on the island of Brač

In the towns of Komiža and Vis, there are also interesting open-air cinemas. During the hot summer nights, the open-air cinema under the starry skies, definitely has a certain charm and a touch of romance.

In particular, the cinema in Komiža is one of the oldest cinemas in Croatia, and presents unavoidable part of a cultural offer in Komiža. Although being among the oldest, this cinema is equipped with modern digital devices – thanks to this, there are always the most recent film titles on the programme. There is also a displayed collection of fishing tools, used for fish processing, highly developed in the past. Amongst the exhibits, a special attention is drawn by a replica of the famous Komiža’s fishing boat – Falkuša.

Address: Riva sv. Mikule 4, Komiža. Phone: +385(0)21 713 019

Archaeological Museum, Vis: The museum is housed in “Batarija”, the main fortress built by Austrians, during their rule at the 19th -century. This museum has the largest collection of amphoras in Croatia. It is particularly interesting to admire the collection, uniquely exhibited in the same way as arranged in the ship’s lower deck, when transported across the Adriatic.

In the museum, there is a collection of Hellenistic monuments, among the largest ones in Croatia, and the artefacts from the prehistoric times.

In the museum there is also the Ethnographic Section showing the exhibits from the local people’s lifestyle – the items that tell the stories about the fishing, the wine growing, habitation, etc.

Water

Vis is one of the rare islands in the Adriatic having its own potable spring water. It is worth visiting (and seeing) the beaches where you could drink fresh water directly from its spring: The Kamenice beach, and Pizdica/Pištica beach (the old local name), where the water springs out of the rock right to the sea. Almost all the beaches have the fresh water springs in their shallow parts, you could feel that while swimming in somewhat colder sea, which is the sign that you have found another spring.

Water on the island is of extremely high quality, which is rare for a karst area – it is safe both for drinking and preparing food. Interesting detail is that this water is pumped by electric pumps from great depths, the unbelievable 170m, which is some fifteen metres beyond the sea level.
